A year after Taiwan water park explosion, Alex Haas recovery continues

The Associated Press

MONT VERNON — A Mont Vernon man recovering from burns from flammable powder sprayed at a water park party in Taiwan a year ago says he's well on his way "to being back to me again."

Alex Haas was in Taiwan teaching English. He was one of nearly 500 people hurt on June 27, 2015. Fifteen people died; Haas suffered burns to over 90 percent of his body.

The 27-year-old Haas was in a medically induced coma for two weeks in a Taipei hospital.

Today, his scars are healing, and he's gained most of his mobility back. He can drive a car, walk his dog and work on his art projects.

Among those impressed with his recovery is the director of a new burn care center in New Taipei, which is opening Monday.
