90,000-plus Toshiba laptops recalled because of defective batteries

A recall has been issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission for Toshiba laptops sold between June 2011 and January 2016.

The laptops may have a defective battery. There are 40 models included with this recall including the Portege, Satellite, and Tecra. The recall involves over 90,000 laptops.

If you have a Toshiba laptop the computer maker has a utility to download that will check your computer to see if the battery is part of the recall. You can also look on the bottom of the laptop and enter your PC model part number to see if you are affected.

There are four reported instances where the defective battery packs overheated and melted. There were no injuries reported.

Toshiba advises those impacted by the recall to remove the battery pack and use the AC power adapter only until it is replaced. Toshiba is providing free replacements.
