8-year-old brought .25 caliber pistol into New England school, showed it to friends

LOWELL, Mass. — Lowell police say that an 8-year-old boy brought a gun from home into school on Monday.

The child reportedly thought that the gun was an "Air Soft" gun, when really it was a .25 caliber pistol.

The police department was notified on Tuesday morning that a third grade student showed some type of gun to several classmates after school. One of the classmates told their parents, who reported it to the police.

Officers met with school officials, the child, and his parents at the Greenhalge Elementary School to learn that the gun in question was at the child's home, police say. When police received the gun they said it was not loaded.

The father of the child says that the firearm was in a box of property belonging to a relative that was temporarily displace due to a fire.

As of now, the child's father is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and improper storage of a firearm.

The Lowell Police Department has submitted a complaint application for the listed charges against the father to Lowell District Court and that complaint/summons has yet been issued yet. Until then, the identification of the father will not be released.
