CANTERBURY — Select Board members are reviewing the applications of eight candidates to become the town's new part-time police chief, after the previous chief stepped down in a case accusing him of sexual assault involving a 16-year-old girl.
According to the Concord Monitor, board members reviewed the applications in a closed, 2½-hour nonpublic session Monday, where the names of the applicants are not being released.
"The process is still ongoing and is considered a personnel matter at this time," Town administrator Ken Folsom said, according to the paper.
It is also recommended that the next chief will likely be "a retired law enforcement officer with many years of experience."
This comes after former police chief, John LaRoche resigned in January after being charged with seven counts of aggravated sexual assault in October 2015. LaRoche's alleged assaults took place in 1999 and 2000, when he is accused of pressuring a teenage girl - then 16, to perform oral sex on him and to engage in other sexual conduct when he was on duty while she was participating in a police explorer program under his supervision. LaRoche pleaded not guilty as the trial continues.
A new chief is expected to be selected and hired by June.
