6th annual New England Pond Hockey Classic began Friday

MEREDITH - The puck dropped at the sixth annual New England Pond Hockey Classic at 8 a.m. Friday and this year's 250 registered teams is the highest total in tournament history.

The tournament takes place each year on the ice at Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith. The teams compete in a variety of divisions including Open, 30+, 40+, 50+ and women's, among others that are designed for less skilled players.

Paddy's of Cambridge, Mass. is looking to defend its 2014 title in the Open division while the Rhode Island Rangers out of Providence, R.I. aim for back-to-back championships in the 40+. Nashua's own Essex 73's have a chance at a three-peat in the 50+.

Notably, the five-time defending 30+ division champions, Franklin, Mass. based "Frozen Hacks," do not appear on the registered list of teams on the website.

Pool play games are scheduled to continue through Saturday night and the playoffs will begin Sunday morning at 9:40 a.m.
