5K set to honor fallen Brentwood officer Steve Arkell

BRENTWOOD - A 5K memorial walk/run is scheduled for Saturday morning in honor of a Brentwood police officer shot and killed in the line of duty last year.

Stephen Arkell, who worked part-time at the Brentwood Police Dept., was killed by a gunman inside a Brentwood home after responding to a domestic disturbance call on May 12, 2014.

The suspect then set the home on fire, and it later exploded.

The entire community has come together through the tragedy and is hoping the memorial 5K will serve as a positive remembrance of the officer - who was also a well-known lacrosee coach, carpenter and friend.

"I think Steve would be very proud of the community spirit," said Heather Arkell, Steve's wife. "Pulling together and supporting everybody - that's the best part of the whole thing."

The run starts Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Swasey Central School in Brentwood.
