50 dogs rescued from 'indescribable' kennel conditions at Sweet Paws Spa in Ossipee


OSSIPEE – The N.H. Humane Society in Laconia rescued more than 50 animals from deplorable conditions at an animal boarding and grooming business that also operated as an animal shelter on Friday.

The Sweet Paws Inn & Spa as well as Sweet Tails Animal Rescue are both located at 1800 Route 16 Center Ossipee.

According to their website, Sweet Tails Animal Rescue is a 501c3 non-profit.

According to the Conway Area Humane Society, 22 dogs and seven cats were removed from the Sweet Paws Spa where dogs were packed into small crates and covered in fecal matter.

31 animals were transported by the White Mountain Disaster Response Rescue Team to the Conway Area Humane Society, 22 animals went to the NH Humane Society and the Lakes Regional Humane Society took in 7 animals.

Several of the dogs boarded there were returned to their owners, others were taken to be treated at area rescue shelters.

MaryLee Gorham, the Executive Director of of the New Hampshire Humane Society described the conditions "like Auschwitz for dogs."

Gorham said the dogs were signed over Friday, so the dogs are in the process of being medically and behaviorally evaluated.

The Humane Society is asking for donations to help these pets.

The N.H. Humane Society is located at 1305 Meredith Center Road in Laconia.
