DERRY- Councilor Al Dimmock admits he faced sexual assault charges in Connecticut more than 30 years ago, but said who ever put up fliers about him only did it because of the way he voted on the budget.
Fliers were put up with Dimmock's photo saying he was convicted of sexual assault in the 1980's in Connecticut.
According to Dimmock, he served less than half of his one year sentence, and said some of the information that's circulating is untrue, including when it happened and the ages of those involved, he said the two women were adults.
He said this was only brought up because he voted for the budget that made huge cuts to the fire department.
“My wife and I have been married 37 years the 25th of this month. If I was a sexual predator, I don't believe she'd be sitting here right now,” Dimmock said.
Janet Conroy, former member of the Board of Selectmen and State Representative lives down the street from Dimmock. She has a sign in her front yard that reads: “Dimmock the Hypocrite.”
Conroy put this sign up after the May 19 budget vote where the council did not allow any public input.
“He had always advocated the for people’s right to speak at the meetings, then he as a council member on the other side of the podium said no,” Conroy said.
Conroy said there have been rumors about Dimmock’s past for more than 20 years.
“I think he made a mistake himself by not saying 'I made a mistake in the past, I paid for it, I want you to know that up front' because that would've negated anything anybody wanted to do,” Conroy said.
According to the town clerk, there is no law or rule keeping Dimmock from holding office.
Dimmock plans to run for re-election next spring.
