3 hikers rescued after getting lost in Gilsum


GILSUM - Fish and Game officer rescued three hikers Sunday after they became lost in the dark while hiking in the Bears Den Natural Area.

The three Keene State College students planned to watch the sunset around 4 p.m. but lost the trail. They only had the flashlights on their cellphones and called 911 for help around 5:30 p.m.

The three hikers were identified at Jacob Lawrence, 19, of Amherst, Adam Phaneuf, 20, of Manchester, and Bernard Deshaies, 20, of Biddeford, Maine.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game reminds hikers to plan appropriately by letting someone know where you plan on hiking; stay with your group and stay on the marked trails, make sure you have a pack carrying extra clothes, food, water, a light source with extra batteries, map, compass, GPS, cell phone among many other necessities.
