3 dead, 1 injured, more missing in Maine fire

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Authorities in Maine say three people are dead, one is in critical condition and several others are unaccounted for after a fire swept through a two-apartment house in Portland.

The Maine State Fire Marshal's Office says seven people escaped without injury from the fire Saturday morning in a two-story building that housed students from the University of Southern Maine.

Portland Fire Chief Jerry LaMoria says he can't say if the victims were students at the university.

Authorities say the young man in critical condition suffered severe burns and jumped from a second-story window. He was taken first to a local hospital and then to a burn center in Boston.

The fire was reported by neighbors at 7:17 a.m. and was still burning some four hours later.
