3-day ice harvest starts on Squam Lake

SANDWICH - The ice harvest on Squam Lake started Wednesday morning and is expected to finish on Friday.

The three-day harvest involves a crew of people who cut into the ice with a large saw, then cut blocks with chainsaws and move them in the water like an assembly line.

Campers use lake ice packed into insulated ice houses that keep the blocks frozen through summer. The blocks are about 12 by 15 by 19 inches and weigh about 120 pounds each.
