3 college hikers rescued off Mount Wonalancet

SANDWICH - New Hampshire Fish and Game responded to a call Tuesday for three stranded hikers on Mount Wonalancet in the Sandwich Range Wilderness Area.

The three men, all students at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, climbed Mount Passaconaway Monday, spent the night camping and expected finish their hike Tuesday. But, according to conservation officers, during their hike Tuesday on Mount Wonalancet, one of the men, 20 year-old Matthew Johnson, was suffering from hypothermia and unable to move.

The other two hikers, Justin Pannell and Spencer Pietryka called 911. A team of four conservation officers and 11 volunteers hiked the three and a half miles through the rugged terrain and deep snow and reached the hikers at 1:30am. The hikers were evaluated and given additional warm gear and were eventually able to hike down the trail.

The rescue was complete at 5:00am Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported.

The rescue was assisted by members of the Mountain Rescue Service as well as the United States Air Force Pararescue Force.
