3 children escape apartment fire in Winthrop

The Associated Press

WINTHROP, Maine (AP) - Three children are safe after escaping an apartment fire in the Maine town of Winthrop.

Fire officials say a 12-year-old child woke up to smoke and fire alarms sounding Saturday morning. He woke up his older brother and sister, and all three escaped the building, unharmed.

The children's mother and her boyfriend were not home at the time.

The fire chief says five people have been displaced by the fire, which likely started in the kitchen.

The cause has not yet been determined.
