3-alarm fire displaces dozens of people in Manchester
MANCHESTER — Two men are being praised as heroes for waking residents in a burning building and saving their lives.
Huge fire, shooting out and up from a three-story apartment building on Cedar Street early Saturday morning. Thanks to two men, the people who call the building home were able to get out just in time.
"I hear somebody hit the door..breaks the door", says Eddy Bolanco, a long-time resident of the complex. "Told me hey go go go, it's fire fire and then I do everything with my family and I go outside" he said.
Bolanco actually threw his mother on his back and jumped out the window. making sure the rest of his family made it out safely.
District Chief James Michael saying two fire fighters suffered minor injuries and Bolanco's wife who is eight-months pregnant was taken to the hospital, is okay.
Everyone else made it out safely, neighbors saying they were woken up by their dig barking when they noticed something was wrong.
"We just heard noise so we stepped out on our porch and we saw a little bit of fire but then that's when we saw a lot of fire" says Emina Bahtrc who lives behind the building.
Bahtrc says it looked like the fire started on the second floor and quickly spread to the third floor, that's when she and her husband called 9-1-1. Her husband was one of the men who ran into the burning building to wake everyone up.
"He went through the door where it was burning..the third floor and everyone over there got out by someone going up and knocking on everyone's door" said a next-door neighbor.
The man didn't want to talk on camera but District Chief Michael, who was on scene, calls the two men heroes.
"Well they definitely saved some people there because the extent of the fire when we got there would have been unlikely that anyone would have survived" said the District Chief.
Those who lost their home are upset but happy to be alive.
"Everything is fine", said Bolanco, "I have my life and there's nothing more important"
The Red Cross is assisting the families and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
