21-year-old using matches to exterminate ants destroys family home, kills 3 pets in New England
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — A 21-year-old man destroyed his family home after trying to exterminate ants with wooden matches, killing their two cats and a dog.
Investigators said Devon Doucette attempted to get rid of ants in his Harmon Street basement by lighting them on fire Saturday. He allegedly ignited one of those matches nearby combustibles, and the fire quickly spread to the rest of the house.
Doucette then carried some of the burning items out of the house, leaving him with burns to his hands and arms.
Officials took Doucette to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns.
The house is owned by his parents, Maurice and Barbara Doucette, who were not home at the time.
Fire investigators said no charges are likely.
A GoFundMe created on behalf of the family raised over $10,000, surpassing its goal.
