200 grams of heroin seized, bag of white powder explodes during Salem arrest
SALEM - 200 grams of heroin were seized at a Salem hotel
When police opened the door to a room at a Holiday Inn on Wednesday, one of the men inside slammed the door in the officer's face, and the other grabbed a bag of white powder and ran to the kitchen sink.
The man at the sink tried to pour the powder down the drain, but the bag exploded and sent a cloud of drugs into the air. The officers arrested the two men, both from Lawrence, Mass..
Nathanael Tirado-Rodriguiez was charged with reckless conduct and falsifying evidence, drug possession with intent to distribute, and resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
Jeffrey Cruz was charged with drug possession, intent to distribute, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
There were active warrants out for the arrest of each man.
Police came to the Holiday Inn room because of a tip about the warrants.
When police inspected the room, they found equipment for making and packaging heroin and fentanyl for sale.
The US DEA evidence team was called because the officers were in danger of exposure to the loose powder. Tirado-Rodriguez was treated and released from Parkland Medical Center for similar health concerns.
Law enforcement estimates that 200 grams of heroin have been seized, rather than distributed and sold on the street.
The drugs are estimated to have been worth $16,000 on the street.
