2 vandals break into Claremont church, spray fire extinguishers, damage religious artifacts

CLAREMONT - Two vandals broke into a church, sprayed fire extinguishers, damaged religious artifacts and took items belonging to the church during the night.

Police say members of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church discovered the damage at 7 a.m. on Sunday. Police say the suspects had forced their way into the church through a window.

The cost of the damage was not immediately available due to the large-scale clean-up required, police said.

Further investigation led police to two suspects. On Sunday afternoon, police arrested Zachary Underwood, 18, of Charlestown and charged him with burglary, criminal mischief and theft.

A second suspect in the case was a juvenile. The suspect was located and released to the family. Police say they will file juvenile petitions on the younger suspect.

Underwood was held without bail and was scheduled to be arraigned in the 5th Circuit Claremont District Court.
