GILMANTON - Two young children in diapers were brought to the police station after they were found wandering in the Sawyer Lake area, carrying a glass drug pipe and lighter.
Police say the children were ages 2 and 3, with one wearing only a diaper and shoes and the second in a light dress, also with diaper and shoes.
The children were found around 10 a.m. on Wednesday by a passer-by who brought the youngsters to the station. Neither child was able to tell police their last name or where they lived.
About an hour later, a Gilmanton officer located the mother who was still asleep inside a house.
The state Department of Children, Youth and Families worked with police to place the children with their father, who lives out of town.
Police say the children were unharmed during the incident, but that the case remains under investigation.
