2 men survive after their vehicle goes through the ice on Lake Winnipesaukee

MOULTONBOROUGH – Two men got out safely and were helped to shore by passing snowmobilers after their Chevrolet Suburban went through the ice of Lake Winnipesaukee on Friday.

According to the Union Leader, Fire Chief David Bengston said the two men were driving near Whaleback Island around 12:30 p.m. when they fell through the ice. They were able to get out of the vehicle and the water before the snowmobilers lent a hand

Bengtson did not identify the driver or passenger but said they refused medical treatment. They've been told they need to remove the vehicle from the water soon.

“We don't ever encourage anyone to drive on the lake ice, but particularly right now it's a bad idea,” he said. “The ice is too thin.”
