2 dead in police-involved shooting in Newark, NJ

NEWARK, N.J. — Two people have been reported dead after a police-involved shooting in Newark, N.J. on Friday morning.

At least one person was allegedly shot by a police officer chasing a group of suspects on foot, according to ABC7NY.

Authorities said three suspects that allegedly were part of a string of early-morning robberies were fleeing from police were jumping out of a minivan and robbing people on the street, ABC reports. An off-duty police officer started following them, before uniformed Newark officers joined the effort.

A foot chase ensued with up to 30 gunshots ringing out at some point. No officers were injured, and the investigation is ongoing.
