2 arrested after report of baby in river proves false

The Associated Press

HAVERHILL, Mass. — A mother and daughter face charges after Haverhill police determined a report of a man throwing a baby into the Merrimack River was a hoax.

Capt. Robert Pistone says the report led to a massive 2 1/2 hour search Thursday night of the river and surrounding area by local and state authorities.

Police charged 42-year-old Holly Fowler and her 23-year-old daughter, Kristine Fowler, with misleading a police investigation and filing a false police report. They're due in court on Monday.

Pistone says the women reported seeing a man throw the baby into the river from a bridge. He says the search ended at about 10 p.m. when investigators determined that the story had been fabricated.

A phone listing for the women could not be found and it wasn't known if they had an attorney.
