1st child influenza-related death reported in NH

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Service reported their first child influenza-related death for the 2016–17 influenza season, according to their weekly report.

There have been a total of 27 influenza deaths so far this season in New Hampshire, 26 of which were adults and the other a pediatric death. The season began Oct. 2, 2016.

There have been 55 national child flu-related deaths this season, the Bureau of Infectious Disease Control Infectious Disease Surveillance Section reported.

The counties of residence for the persons with identified influenza-related death are Belknap, Carroll, Cheshire, Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, and Strafford.

State and local health departments, health care providers and hospitals provide information to the NHDHHS in order to accurately depict the season in the state.

Due to delays in electronic filing of death certificates, the exact dates of these victims are not included on the weekly report. The deaths could have occurred at any point during the flu season and not necessarily when the numbers are updated.
