13 cats rescued from Merrimack River island
MANCHESTER - 13 cats were rescued from an island in the Merrimack River.
In a combined rescue effort by the Manchester Fire Department, Animal Control and the Manchester Animal Shelter the felines were trapped and brought to the shelter where they are being assessed. Officials believe homeless people brought cats to the island and they reproduced. No one was living on the island when rescue workers arrived.
Shelter Manager, Shelley Greenglass says the cats are in good shape, they were just hungry and thirsty when they arrived.
The cats will need to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered. Greenglass expects the cats to be ready by the middle of next week for adoption.
Because the cats were found on an island they are all named tropical island names like Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago.
