FARMINGTON, Maine - Police in New Hampshire say the 1 year-old boy who was the subject of an Amber Alert is safe and his father is in custody in Maine.

Captain David Kretschmar of the Somersworth Police Department says that officers from the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and the Farmington Police Department took Jeremiah Grant of Berwick, Maine into custody this morning after a chase. Grant's 1 year-old son, Malachi, was found unhurt in his father's car.

An Amber Alert was issued for the 1 year-old Thursday night after police said Grant took the child from his mother without her consent after making comments that led investigators to believe that the child was in danger. Police said that Grant is mentally unstable and is a danger to himself and others. Grant does have a criminal history and is a registered sex offender.

Kretschmar says Jeremiah Grant is facing Fugitive From Justice charges in Maine, and will likely face more charges there as well. He's also facing charges in New Hampshire of Taking Without Owner's Consent and one felony count of Interference with Custody. It's not clear when he'll be returned to New Hampshire to face those charges.

Malachi Grant will be reunited with his mother later this morning.
