1 taken into custody after altercation with Manchester police
MANCHESTER - Cell phone video captured the end of a large scuffle between several Manchester police officers and a suspect Thursday evening.
Neighbors described a chaotic scene with close to a dozen cruisers. They say, at first, it was just a few officers trying to apprehend a man, and then things got physical.
“Like a wrestling match in the road until the other ones showed up and started tasing him,” said David Magoon who witnessed the altercation..
“And he wound up being stunned at least two maybe three times,” said John Casey who also witnessed the encounter.
It all happened on Massabesic Street near the Shop'n'Go convenience store. Witnesses say it was the scene of a robbery earlier in the day.
It’s unclear why police initially made contact with the man, but neighbors described seeing small plastic bags fly out of his backpack during the altercation with police.
With the help of his colleagues, one plain-clothed officer was helped into one of the cruisers. Witnesses said he appeared to be injured.
“Other officers were observing him because he might have gotten hurt,” Casey said.
“He got hurt wrestling with him while they were trying to take him down on the tar over there and I think what he did is he was trying to flip him and he’s screwing his own back up trying to do it,” Magoon said.
Neighbors said it was a hectic scene, but something they’ve gotten used to on their street.
“It is a rough neighborhood,” Casey said.
