1 man dies, second injured after truck tire explodes at Salem Sears Auto Center

SALEM - One person has died and another was seriously injured at the Sears Auto Center in the Mall at Rockingham Park after a truck tire apparently exploded on an industrial tire changing machine.

Police say Justin Almon, 22, of Sandown was working at the auto center and suffered blunt force trauma to his head after the tire exploded. He was taken to Parkland Medica Center where he was pronounced dead Saturday morning,

Adam Sproul, 23, of Boothbay, Maine, a customer, also suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Lawrence General Hospital and then airlifted to Boston Medical Center.

Preliminary investigation revealed Almon was in the process of fixing a large truck tire on an industrial tire changer when the accident occurred. The incident is currently being investigated by the Salem Police Investigative Services Unit and Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials.

Sears issued the following statement in the wake of the accident.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our associate, and we send our deepest condolences to them," said Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holding. "We also send our thoughts and concerns to our customer who was injured in this tragic accident. We are working closely with local authorities as they investigate this matter."
