TBS late night comedian Samantha Bee began her Wednesday night show Full Frontal with an apology for using a vulgar word when describing President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump. In her opening monologue on the May 31st show, Bee criticized the administration and its handling of illegal immigrants being detained at the Mexico border, more specifically the children who are being separated from their parents and held at another detention facility.
When a picture of Ivanka Trump with her daughter appeared on the screen, Bee called her a "freckless c—t".
The next day, her comments drew fire from both political parties, and was just days after Roseanne Barr made her ill-fated Tweets that led to her hit show being cancelled.
Wednesday night's show was her first since the show that began this controversy.
“You know, a lot of people were offended and angry that I used an epithet to describe the President’s daughter and advisor last week," she said. "It is a word I have used on the show many times, hoping to reclaim it, this time I used it as an insult. I crossed the line. I regret it and I do apologize for that."
Then Bee took a few jabs at Texas Senator Ted Cruz and to men in general, to some applause from her live audience.
“I never intended it to hurt anyone, except Ted Cruz. Many men were also offended by my use of the word… I do not care about that. I hate that this distracted from more important issues.”
Those important issues she's talking about are the children who are being held separately from their parents by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Bee has blamed the Trump administration for this policy during the immigrant vetting process, however it is a decades-old law.
“I should have known that a potty-mouthed insult would be inherently more interesting to them than juvenile immigration policy," she said, them being those who criticized her.“ I would do anything to help those kids. I hate that this distracted from them and so to them I am also sorry.”
