This time around Maverick is now a flight instructor at the Navy Top Gun Flight School. His former nemesis, Iceman, played by Val Kilmer, has signed for the new movie.
There's no word on whether Meg Ryan will be back to play Carole, although the son she had with Goose (Anthony Edwards) is expected to be in the new movie.
Edwards of course can't be back since he died while flying, but some speculation has it that his son becomes a pilot and blames Maverick for the death of his father. Sources have said Kelly McGillis will not be in the sequel.
One of the biggest songs on the radio in 1986 (which still gets considerable airplay today) is Kenny Loggins theme song for the movie "Danger Zone". Loggins told TMZ when he recently ran into Cruise backstage at "The Tonight Show", and Cruise told him the song would be used in the new movie.
Loggins said he wants to create a new version of the song and perhaps perform it with another group. "I'm hoping to do it, maybe as a duet, with a younger act", he said.
He stopped short of offering up a hint to who he's been talking to but said "the rockers I'm interested in are male."
If I were going to pick a hard rock act to record the new song, I think I'd have to go with the band Disturbed. They've been known for putting their own takes on songs like Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence" and Genesis "Land of Confusion."
Paramount Pictures said they plan to release Top Gun 2 on July 12, 2019. There's no doubt in my mind this will be one of the biggest movies of the summer of '19.
